The holidays are approaching and it’s a great time to share some of our family traditions. Kelly Diltz, manager at Gateway Apartments, looks forward to celebrating with a blended Italian and Polish family.
They start with the Polish foods on Christmas Eve and save the the Italian foods for Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve, they have a traditional Polish Wigilia, a dinner in which no meat is eaten. It consists of several courses including fish, salads, pierogies and cabbage dishes, and always begins with this delicious mushroom soup.
Christmas Eve Mushroom Soup
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 cups chopped onions
- 1 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced
- 2 teaspoons dried dill weed
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 cup milk
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ground black pepper to taste
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Saute the onions in the butter for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and saute for 5 more minutes. Stir in the dill, paprika, soy sauce and broth. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk the milk and flour together. Pour this into the soup and stir well to blend. Cover and simmer for 15 more minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Finally, stir in the salt, ground black pepper, lemon juice, parsley and sour cream. Mix together and allow to heat through over low heat, about 3 to 5 minutes. Do not boil. Serve immediately.
We had a great time at Malotesi Wineries in the summer and we’re looking forward to our upcoming tour on Friday, October 16th.
Fall foliage will be at its peak for a wine/beer tasting trip and tour of Grovedale Winery and RiverBarge Brewing Company.
Gateway residents love it that we provide the transportation and snacks!
For many of our residents, summer is their favorite season at Gateway Apartments because they LOVE their swim club. Not only do they get to relax all season in a clean, quiet and lifeguard-attended pool but we also provide lots of fun in and around the water.
Water aerobics, BBQ & pizza parties and a late night live jazz swim are just a sampling of the community events that make summer special at Gateway!
Please join us for our Open House on Sunday, March 15, from 10-2 and Saturday, March 21, from 10-2.
I moved to Gateway in May 2013 to join the Wilkes University creative writing community, where we encourage our students to focus on a sense of place when developing their writing.
The Gateway is a prime example about the importance of place because it evokes a sense of community, something that starts the moment you arrive.
There is a tremendous sense of security.
The convenience of being close to everything, yet surrounded by the beauty and serenity of Kirby Park.
Simply said, the Gateway is not just a place to live… it’s a place to call home.
It’s one week until Thanksgiving! The staff of Gateway Apartments wants to wish everyone a fabulous and safe Thanksgiving. We also want to remind everyone that our office will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, November 27. We will resume normal business hours on Friday, November 28.
Kelly Diltz (center) has worked for the Manor Group since March of 1990. She began working in the sales office at our company’s hotel, the East Mountain Inn, as the banquet coordinator where she worked until March of 1999 when she became Resident Manager of Gateway.
She remembers being asked at that time, “How would you like to be the mayor of your own little town?”
Little did she know at that time how the “little town” of Gateway Apartments would become less like a town and more like a family. She enjoys the daily interaction with the residents who are proud to call Gateway home and these interactions make her even more proud that she and her staff play a major part in keeping them long term, happy residents.
We received a lovely letter from one of our residents about our recent efforts during the winter storm. Here is what was said:
“I am writing to express my appreciation for the extraordinary efforts of the entire maintenance team following the recent winter storm.
Despite the closure of businesses throughout the surrounding area, and Wilkes University declaring a snow emergency, the perimeter roads to the Gateway Apartments were plowed before 8:00 AM. The sidewalks were cleared soon thereafter, despite an incredible amount of snow that created havoc throughout the entire Northeast.
As a resident of the Gateway community, please know I very much appreciate the attention to our safety and comfort, something that is demonstrated each and every day by the entire maintenance team.
We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of professionals in our community.”
From all of us at Gateway Apartments, we wish you and yours a very happy New Year.
Our annual holiday party will be on Tuesday, December 17th from 5:30-7:30 at the community building. Please let us know if you are attending by calling the rental office by Thursday, December 12th to help with our planning.
With the holiday season here, we just want to also remind everyone that we will be closing the rental office at 3:00 pm on Christmas Eve. The offices will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
If any maintenance emergencies occur when the office is closed, you should call our Maintenance Emergency Number: (866) 613-8014.
